Alghero

Alghero is one of the most popular tourist resorts in northern Sardinia, and is known for the numerous Catalan influences that are evident in its cooking, its dialect and its architecture.

Is an ancient gem, whose city centre that stretches from the harbour all the way to the “Dante” promenade is a maze of cobblestone alleyways (with their names written in both Catalan and Italian), enclosed within imposing bastions at the water’s edge or overlooking the sea and populated by craft boutiques where coral and precious stones are worked, typical restaurants, bars and nightspots, historic palazzos and ancient residences, along with sky-scraping bell towers and multi-coloured cupolas belonging to numerous churches, which stand as proof of the lengthy religious history of the city.

It all adds up to a delightful mix of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classical architecture.

Alghero Vecchia, or Alguer Vella, was the royal city of the Aragonese centuries and is still marked by a strong Catalan imprint and is a unique heritage in Sardinia and in Italy between civilization, history and antropology.

Is also renown for the crafting of coral: the coral collected on the sea bed here is very highly prized, since it has a vibrant reddish orange colour, and it is worked into various shapes by expert hands, perpetuating a tradition that has been handed down over numerous generations.

I suggest you to buy in stores under the brand name “Corallium Rubrum”.

THE BEACHES

Alghero offers a wide choice of magnificent beaches with fine white sand, but also a beautiful panorama of jagged and flat cliffs.

Up to north, but still in Town:
Lido San Giovanni (easy to reach walking ) and Maria Pia,famous for her brilliant white and dunes covered with age old junipers.

Few kilometres away direction Fertilia:
Le Bombarde, a paradise of mediterranean landscape , trasparent water, sunglowed sand. Lazzaretto, long and white sandy beach, sparkling water in a beautiful and calm surrounding , where the se only sound is the rumour of the waves and a persistent flavour of mediterranean vegetation.

A little further away,in the bay of Porto Conte,
the relaxing beach of Mugoni, golden sand that plunges into the placid waters of an always calm and crystalline sea, a totally sheltered oasis and behind it a pine forest and eucalyptus trees, where you can have a picnic and shelter from the sun.

We find the beach of Porto Ferro,
a two kilometer long crescent of sand,
with fine grains of a particular dark amber color, sometimes reddish, set
between the protected marine area of Capo Caccia and the head of the
Argentiera. The seabed slopes gently from the shore, frequent winds and high waves make it a destination for surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. The trees, along with sand dunes covered with sea lilies, separate the beach from the beautiful scenery of lake of baratz, the only natural lake on the island.

The mostly part of the northern beaches of Alghero,
Is included in the protected Marine Area , Capo Caccia-Isola Piana where hundreds of treasures are kept, including the cave of Neptune, reachable by land, via the Escala del Cabirol, and by sea, with boats that leave from the marina.

Taking a drive south, from Alghero to Bosa,
It s possibile to follow a long cliff up to la Speranza beach. The sand is clear and thin, which plunges into a sea of bright blue tones, often moved by the mistral wind which makes it coveted by surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts.

Alghero doesn t mean only sea and sun
it also means 6 museums, four archaeological sites, an attractive regional natural park, a vast protected marine area, a fascinating lagoon area and amazing trekking routes surrounded in the pristine green of the mediterranean scrub.
